That Poor, Poor Girl

While channel surfing this evening, we came across a live Jim Croce video of “Bad Bad Leroy Brown”. Mesmerized, we stayed glued to VeeH-OneClassics. After Jim Croce finished, the station played “Close to You” by the Carpenters. I can’t help but think of a friend I had in college who told me that his mother would say “That poor, poor girl; she had such a beautiful voice” when she heard a Carpenters song. I’ve been ruined by that one statement. Every. Single. Time. I hear Karen Carpenter I am compelled to say “That poor, poor girl; she had such a beautiful voice”. Then, I usually laugh. A terrible thing to admit, but just the other day I admitted that Marky Mark has it going on.

NEVER under any circumstances disrespect Karen Carpenter in front of Jeremy. He has this strange, deep, deep, and unexplained love for the Carpenters (I think he’s waxing sentimental for days when his parents listened to them on their 8 track in the old 72 Dodge dart while Jeremy sat in the back seat singing “Close to You” at the top of his lungs). This was one of only two reasons (I’ll tell you the other one of these days)I considered NOT dating him when we first met. Isn’t that silly of me? But I still have to fight off the uncontrollable urge to vomit when I hear her hit this particular low note with her voice. Something about it triggers my gag reflex. But I got over it. Funny how love is.
