Garden overrun with squash and zucchini. Tomatoes and eggplant coming in. A handful of pickling cucumbers, lame-o beans finally have blooms and there are okra, cantaloupe and watermelons starting up. I couldn’t even get to the blackberries because it is 1000 degrees and my bucket was full.
I made several grandmothers spin in their various urns and graves by cleaning out the freezer of all of the squash and zucchini from last year. At least the compost pile is happy.
Update 7/11/10:
13 lbs of zucchini shredded and frozen
9 lbs of squash shredded and frozen
1 QT of refrigerator dill pickles
1 QT of refrigerator kohlrabi pickles
A little bit of quick, pickled beets
7 lbs of Berkshire pork belly put on the cure
My tomato plants died. This is the first year in, I can’t even guess how many gardens, that I won’t have tomatoes. I’m pretty upset about it. The potatoes are going gangbusters though. The beets were delicious. All in all a pretty lame garden for me though. I envy your bounty. Truthfully though, it’s just as well since I don’t have a lot of help in the eating of the produce this year. But I will still miss those freshly picked tomatoes…
I think if we had bad luck with tomatoes, I’d be really bummed too. Ours are very bushy and are just starting to produce. I guess the funky weather this year hasn’t really been that friendly to gardens…first too wet and cold and now too hot and dry.
We ate some of your squash and zuchinni’s tonight! Yum! I roasted them in the oven with some chilli powder, thyme, cumin, salt and pepper and olive oil. Delicious!!!
That really sounds delicious. I’m going to make stuffed zucchini tonight…I’ll have to try some of those spices.
So jealous. I skipped dinner tonight. I’ve finally updated, by the way.
