Ohio Is On My Mind

I have been reluctant to talk about this but I have a phone interview with a hiring manager on Friday. I don’t want to jinx the call, but it sounds like a perfect job for me. I talked to the hiring manager briefly on Monday and like her already–we joked around a bit on the phone and set up the interview for Friday morning. The hiring manager is located in Ohio. The job is located here but I’ve been thinking a lot about Ohio lately. Specifically about the job, of course, but also how I’ve never been there. Pittsburgh is as close as I’ve come to Ohio. A shame, really, but that will change if I get this job.

In order to torture myself, I’ve been trying to think of songs about Ohio or by Ohio singers or both. Yes, I have a lot of space in my brain and I devote it to crap like this.

Anyway…one of my favorite lyrics of all time is “a, o, way to go, Ohio”. Seriously. Something about the delivery.

I’ve had the “Tin Soldiers and Nixon coming” lyric stuck in my head since vacation last week. The Isley Brothers are awesome. But, you already know about my love of soul music. Yes I know they didn’t write it but the screaming guitars and the bass line rule and Neil Young is like nails on the chalk board for me.

And, of course, there’s REM’s Cuyahoga. As someone who grew up in the late 80s, REM will always be on one of my lists.

Friday afternoon update: No interview today. I called and left three messages and sent an email and I have yet to hear back as to what the fuck happened. I can only assume catastrophic family/business crisis otherwise I have no use for this job–except I was really getting excited about it.

Since I’m from Ohio, I can say it’s a great state. And Chrissie Hynde is the shit. Probably the best thing to come out of Ohio. You’ll hate the post I just put up, since it’s a Neil Young video. I’m not a fan of his, but this one song just speaks to me.

Watching that Pretenders video again, I remember being in college in the early 80′s and with the death of two original band members, lamenting the fact that I would never get to go to a Pretenders concert.

That was pretty devastating to me at the time. I’ve loved the Pretenders since the first time I heard them. I just remembered that I wrote about my love for Chrissie Hynde in a blog post earlier this year.

I remember your post. She is so awesome. I laughed when I read your first comment about her being the shit…because she really is.
