Rocket Man

Last night we had tickets to the Elton John concert. We’ve had these tickets for months because he had to cancel the original show due to illness. Yesterday was the day of my grandmother’s funeral mass. By the time we went to that and I went back to work and then got home, I really wasn’t very pumped about going to the concert. There was also a “say farewell to Grammie” dinner hosted by Grammie (really, she paid for it) last night. So, we attempted and failed to get rid of our tickets and I went to the dinner instead. The better-half ended up having to take care of his mother last night so Elton John lost out to family stuff on both sides.

While the pocketbook is still smarting from how much we wasted on those tickets, I’m very glad I went to the dinner last night. The meal was not all that great, but we had such a good time hanging out together. I sat next to one of my sisters, a cousin and his fiancée and another cousin’s teenaged boys. Towards the end of the evening we were in stitches over a silly joke that kept waxing and waning and dragged out for way too long but kept us laughing anyway.

Realistically, dinner last night may be the last time I see some of those people. The family is not that closely knit anymore. People grow up, people move away, people make other families…it happens.

That’s too bad about the concert, but I totally get the whole thing about the family drifting apart. Our kids were the first and we were very popular back then with the family members. Since they all have had their own kids, we rarely get together anymore.

It’s ok though. I kind of like being left alone.
